Marine Ecology

marine ecology

Marine Ecology is an interdisciplinary field that evaluates the relationships between living organisms, nonliving matter, and the environment. Our faculty use a combination of field sampling, experimental approaches, chemical tracers, remote sensing, and mathematical modeling to quantify the functional role of marine organisms in mediating energy flow, biogeochemical cycles, and community structure. UGA faculty specialize in investigations of coastal ecosystem functioning, including salt marshes, estuaries, and near-shore habitats. They take full advantage of the easy access to these environments provided by the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island.
